Kids Out @ NTU

Finally our TOTS' annual kids camp is over! And this year's organisers were mainly Ken and Chou Woon, our project directors. It ended up being quite similar to the one that Joseph and myself organised for our committee from the previous academic year. This year's "campers" were very different from the previous year however, but equally hyper and restless. Gives me a little deja vu from the many childrens' camps I used help organise from my yester years as well. Those familiar lines of "Kids are ya READY?!?!". Geesh, I think there're permanently stuck in my head.

Haha, anyway I felt it was pretty much fun all round today. The weather was hot and humid whole day. Since most kids were from Club Rainbow Singapore, we had to take special precautions such as no prolonged periods in the sun, drink more water, special diets and special toiletry needs. It felt good at the end of the day to wave the kids back to their normal livelihood. Not that I'm glad to see them go, but I know that we made a difference in their lives for the short 8 hours they had been entrusted to us.

Anyway, some were really brilliant. Their win lose or draw were like quite wowser! I think most of the seniors were impressed thoroughly by their knowledge, and those who were indifferent were either stoning or thinking about lunch. It's nice to see some kids gelling well with varsity students such as ourselves, and Andy turned into "Candy Chow Ah Kua" because of the kids at the end of the day. Some kids were of course more innate, but expressed themselves at the appropriate times; others were more outgoing and some were literally running out and about at every opportunity. Don't bat your eyelid or they'll be on your back the next instant.

Oh yes, Club Rainbow is a special organisation that aids kids with lifelong chronic illnesses. From whom we got to meet today, I must admit that most will pass as normal healthy kids if we hadn't known their conditions before. Some were on clutches and prams, but most were up and running. It's like anyone amongst us in society could well be facing a lifelong, life threatening disease and we could have been working with them without a hint of their situation. My lesson learnt today is to be sensitive to other's needs, because you'll never know fully the situation they're in. Unless you're God, or a prophet of some sort. Heh..
